My name is Yoana Nin, and I’ve been serving the greater triangle area, selling real estate and helping people relocate for over 10 years. You can read more about me HERE. In this blog post, I’m going to cover the top five things you need to know before moving to Durham, North Carolina, so let’s get started!
Watch my video on YouTube! I’d love to hear in the comments what you think about Durham! What else would you like to add to the list?
- Amazing Food Scene
Let’s start with the most important thing: the food scene. Durham has a food culture that is second to none. From seafood to Indian to Mediterranean, you can find it all here. Durham is a very diverse city, and regardless of where you’re relocating from, you’re sure to find something to satisfy your cravings.
If you’re a foodie, you’ll love the Blue NOTE Grill and the Tobacco Roads Sports Cafe, both of which are just minutes from the Durham Performing Art Center. But today, I want to take you on a journey to one of my favorite places that offers waffles and chicken. I don’t know if you’ve ever heard of this combination, but it is to die for, and it’s right here on the corner.
This is Dame’s Chicken and Waffles.
Trust me, you won’t want to miss this culinary experience. Once you’ve satisfied your hunger, it’s time to move on to the next thing on our list.
- Cultural Life
Durham has an amazing cultural life that you won’t find anywhere else. Let’s start with the Museum of Durham History.
This museum has really cool exhibits, artifacts, and spoken accounts of history and culture. I’ve also heard really cool things about the Nasher Museum of Art because, of course, everybody loves art. And speaking of art and history, I am right here at the Duke Chapel,
which is part of Duke University’s campus.
This building is definitely both art and history altogether. It was built in 1932, and it is one of the backbones of many jobs that are offered here in Durham. But speaking of jobs, let’s move on to the next thing on our list.
- Job Opportunities
Durham is home to a large section of the Research Triangle Park. We’re talking about 7,000 acres, 300 plus companies, over 65,000 jobs.
And we’re not just talking small companies but huge companies like IBM, Glaxo Smith Kline, General Electric, and Cisco Systems. If you are into tech, if you are into the medical field, biotech, or anything, you can find a job in Durham, and they’re actually very well paid.
The next thing you need to consider before moving to Durham is housing. Can you actually afford to own a house here in the Triangle area, or can you afford to rent? Visit my website to read my guide to buying a home and browse through all the homes for sale in Durham NC.
Instead of going to the homes and showing you neighborhoods, which there are a lot of amazing neighborhoods, I have actually decided to come here to BOXYARD.
All of the homeowners are having fun listening to music and enjoying a great dinner. So why not? But let me give you some quick stats on what’s happening with the Durham neighborhoods and the housing, which are literally taken from the multiple listing surveys in the last 30 days.
So what’s happening with the market is this: for the detached homes, which is the single-family, the average price point was about $465,000, and when you’re looking at townhomes, we average about $362,000. So if you’re coming from California, Texas, or San Francisco, this is really, really
Moreover, Durham is home to a number of top-notch universities, including Duke University and North Carolina Central University, providing ample opportunities for higher education and continuing education. In addition to traditional education, Durham is also known for its many cultural and artistic events, including the American Dance Festival and the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival. With so many opportunities for education, entertainment, and cultural enrichment, it’s easy to see why Durham is such a popular destination for those seeking a well-rounded and fulfilling lifestyle.
- Outdoor Recreation
Another great thing about living in Durham is the abundance of outdoor recreational opportunities. With a mild climate and easy access to the great outdoors, there’s no shortage of things to do for those who love to be active and enjoy the fresh air. Durham is home to several beautiful parks, including Duke Forest, which offers over 7,000 acres of woodland and wildlife, and the Sarah P. Duke Gardens, a stunning 55-acre botanical garden that’s perfect for picnics, strolling, and taking in the natural beauty of the area.
For those who prefer more active pursuits, Durham has plenty to offer as well. There are numerous hiking and biking trails, as well as opportunities for fishing, kayaking, and even hot air balloon rides. And if you’re a golfer, Durham has several top-rated courses to choose from. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced athlete, there’s something for everyone in Durham’s great outdoors.
Finally, one of the most important things to know before moving to Durham is the sense of community that permeates the area. Durham is known for its friendly and welcoming atmosphere, and residents often describe it as a place where everyone knows everyone else. Whether you’re new to the area or a long-time resident, you’ll find that people in Durham are always willing to lend a helping hand or offer a warm welcome.
This sense of community is evident in the many local events and festivals that take place throughout the year. From the popular annual Bull Durham Blues Festival to the Durham Farmers’ Market, there’s always something happening in Durham that brings people together.
And with a thriving local arts scene, there are plenty of opportunities to support local artists and performers and to connect with others who share your interests.
