Raleigh, named after Sir Walter Raleigh, famous English poet, soldier and adventurer, is the capital of the North Carolina State. After Charlotte, it is the second largest city in North Carolina. It is mostly located within Wake County, with only a small portion in Durham County. It is home to North Carolina State University and is famously known as a part of the Research Triangle Park (RTP), a tri-city region of Raleigh, Durham and Chapel Hill. Research Triangle Park houses the second largest IBM operation in the world as well as over 200 companies that specialize in pharmaceuticals, chemicals, and electronics.
Raleigh is also known as the “City of Oaks”, owning the title due to the plethora of oak trees that line its streets. Although it stays true to its small town Southern charm, it is also emerging as an up-and-coming metropolis as well as a technology hub. In fact, due to its quality of life, amenities, atmosphere and community, U.S. News even ranked the city #13 in its list of Best Places to live in USA. Raleigh is often the recipient of national recognition and some of its other rankings include America’s Best Places to Live #1 (Businessweek.com, June 2011), Best Cities for Raising a Family #5 (Forbes, April 2012 & 2015) as well as America’s Most Wired Cities #1 (Forbes, March 2010). In 2011, its population density was 2,826 people per square mile. But due to its rising popularity, a lot of people have been shifting to Raleigh in recent years. On greatschools.org, Raleigh Charter High School had the highest rating of 10/10 followed by Exploris, Leesville Road High and Wake Early College at 9/10. In 2017, Douglas Elementary was named the top magnet school in the country while Wiley Elementary was named the top magnet elementary school. Furthermore, Wake STEM Early College High School also received the School of Excellence award from Magnet Schools of America. Along with primary and secondary education, Raleigh is well known for higher education as well. North Carolina State University, Meredith College and Strayer University are some of its more popular universities.
As you can tell, education is a big part of Raleigh. Based on the percentage of residents who had college degrees, Raleigh was ranked the third most educated city in the US in 2011 by Time magazine. In 2017, it was ranked the second most educated city in the US by Forbes Magazine with over 49% of adults receiving education. Because Raleigh has made education to universities and schools accessible from most of its homes, even homes for sale, its citizens are more intellectual, skilled, and productive compared to those from other cities.
There are a lot of things for kids to do in Raleigh. Pullen Park, which is the first public park in Raleigh, provides a lot of entertainment for kids as it has an aquatic centre, plenty of green space, carousel, as well as entertaining rides.
